Macedonian Medical Society (MLD)
The professional home of doctors of medicine in the Republic of Macedonia.
The Macedonian Medical Society (MLD) is a professional organization of doctors of medicine in the Republic of Macedonia. It was established on 12 August 1945 as the Association of Doctors, Dentists and Pharmacists. In 1947 and 2004, pharmacists and dentists respectively formed their own independent associations.
At its founding, MLD had only 123 doctors and dentists and 96 pharmacists. Today, it includes over 5000 doctors of all profiles, with around 35% in primary health care and 65% specialists in various fields, organized through approximately 70 specialist and subspecialist associations and 20 regional associations according to place of work and residence.

MLD has played a foundational role in the development of modern Macedonian medicine:
- Predecessor of the Faculty of Medicine, providing the first teaching staff.
- Initiator and founder of the Medical Chamber of Macedonia.
- Consistent driver of professional and ethical standards in healthcare.

The mission of MLD is to continuously improve the quality of health care for the population by:
- Promoting and developing Macedonian medicine and related sciences.
- Establishing good medical practice and high ethical standards.
- Preserving and improving the dignity and reputation of the medical profession.
- Protecting the interests and rights of its members.
โ๏ธ Tasks & Objectives
MLD is the main driver of continuing medical education (CME) and continuous professional development of doctors and related professions. It achieves its goals through:
- Organizing and supporting congresses, symposiums, professional meetings, workshops and other CME activities.
- Informing the professional community via its publications: “Macedonian Medical Review” and the newsletter “Lekarski Vesnik”.
- Cooperating in planning undergraduate and postgraduate studies of doctors.
- Supporting scientific research in collaboration with scientific and higher education institutions.
- Organizing campaigns and programs for public health promotion (vaccination, infectious diseases, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, smoking, alcoholism, healthy lifestyle, etc.).
- Fostering and promoting medical ethics through its Ethics Committee, the Code of Medical Deontology of Macedonia and the Code of Ethics of the World Medical Association.
๐ Regional & International Cooperation
MLD maintains active cooperation at regional and international level:
- Long-standing member of the World Medical Association (WMA) and the European Forum of Medical Associations (EFMA/WHO).
- Through its specialist associations, member of more than 80 international specialist organizations.

Initiator of the
(2005), bringing together medical associations from Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Greece, Turkey and, later, Montenegro, Slovenia, Romania, Serbia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Belarus, Latvia, Azerbaijan, Armenia and other countries. - Cooperation with the World Medical Association, EFMA/WHO, the World Health Organization and the Association of Medical Specialists of the EU, as well as bilateral cooperation with numerous national medical associations.
